A recent study claims that artificial intelligence can now determine someone’s personality type by analyzing a photo. 12,000 volunteers completed a questionnaire measuring personality traits before uploading a total of 31,000 selfies. The artificial neural network built by the researchers then assessed 128 different aspects of a person’s face. The AI would use this information to categorize each person based on five personality traits. These traits were: conscientiousness, neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, and openness. When compared to the questionnaires filled in by participants, the AI could accurately determine personality type 58% of the time. The researchers say that the AI is better than the average human who is asked to gauge a stranger’s personality type. Predictions based on female faces were more reliable, with conscientiousness being the most recognizable trait. The technology could be used to find ‘best matches’ by employers, dating sites, or customer services.
