Many interviews have moved online now, and with that comes added pressure for the candidate and the hiring manager. You can tell a lot about a person from their body language, so here are some simple ways to improve yours for an interview. When speaking, avoid looking at yourself onscreen and instead look directly at the camera. It may feel strange but it will show the other person that you’re engaged in the conversation. Maintain good posture throughout the interview. It shows that you’re interested, alert and engaged in what’s happening. For a virtual interview, you should be about an arm’s length away from the screen/camera. This gives you the place to lean in during the interview. Leaning slightly closer to the camera shows you’re interested. It also replicates what naturally happens during face-to-face interviews. Avoid folding your arms, it could give the other person a negative perception of you. Hand gestures can be a good way to help get your point across, but avoid using too many as they can be distracting. Nodding when appropriate can help the other person feel more relaxed and can show that you're listening. Be careful though, as too much nodding could make it appear like you’re distracted.
