The Rio de Janeiro government has named its new anti-racism law after Real Madrid’s Vinícius Jr. The 'Vini Jr law' will see sporting events stopped or suspended in the event of racist behavior. It also includes protocols on how to process complaints of racism as well as mandatory educational campaigns. The law was inspired by 22-year-old Vinícius’ response to being racially abused during a game in Valencia. During a ceremony at the Maracanã Stadium, Vinícius expressed his gratitude for the tribute, saying it’s a “very special day”. He received awards from Rio’s legislative assembly and city council and his footprints were added to Maracanã Stadium's Walk of Fame. "Sometimes, I wonder if I deserve so much. I didn’t expect so many awards and to receive all this affection at the Maracanã, where I attended and played so many Flamengo matches", Vinícius Jr. This comes after Vinícius was asked to lead a FIFA anti-racism committee which will suggest stricter punishments for discriminatory behavior.
