Bloating is a common, painful and uncomfortable symptom many women experience before their period. Most women experience bloating 1-5 days before their period begins and the pain will vary for everyone. To reduce bloating eat foods rich in protein and potassium such as chicken, fish, tofu, bananas, tomatoes, and asparagus. Foods like broccoli and Brussel sprouts contain a complex sugar that is difficult for the body to break down properly. They often cause gas and bloating so stay away from these foods before your period. Exercise can be great for relieving PMS symptoms and reducing a bloated stomach. Be careful what type of exercise you do. Yoga or swimming are best but HIIT workouts can increase inflammation. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine as it can enhance PMS symptoms and irritate the bowels. Sleep can help reduce bloating so aim to get at least 8 hours sleep a night before and during your period. Studies have shown that taking the pill can reduce the symptoms of PMS and painful periods. So if you’re not already taking the pill or another form of birth control it could be worth talking about with your doctor.
