Louis Van Gaal’s comments about Lionel Messi’s World Cup win being rigged have restarted discourse regarding soccer conspiracy theories. The Dutchman said that Argentina’s win in Qatar was “premeditated”, adding another conspiracy to football’s ever-growing list. One of the biggest conspiracy theories of all time is the ‘UEFAlona” theory, where certain fans believe that Barcelona were helped by officiating. A well-known example of the theory was Chelsea's loss to Barcelona in a Champions League semi-final in 2009. The horrible officiating, paired with Mourinho’s later theory of Barca’s sponsor UNICEF and its affiliation with UEFA, have added fuel to the theory. Another conspiracy theory that’s gone down in football folklore is Ronaldo’s sudden seizure on the eve of the 1998 World Cup Final. Ronaldo would play in the final; however, speculation would range from Ronaldo being intoxicated to Brazil accepting bribes for hosting rights. One of the more humorous conspiracies was the idea that Premier League referee Howard Webb had a soft spot for Manchester United. Footballers even bought into the conspiracy after Webb gave some favorable decisions to United; however, the former ref dismissed the theory. "Contrary to what you might have seen on the internet, I never shared a bed with Sir Alex Ferguson. There is no statue of me outside Old Trafford. My kids are not called Rio, Wayne and Cristiano. There is no Red Devil tattoo inked on my left buttock," said Howard Webb.
