Hamburg-based Teutonia Ottensen were punished for walking off the field mid-game after one of their players was allegedly racially abused. Teutonia were 2-1 up against Bremer SV in the fourth division of German football when Marcus Coffie made the claim. He claimed that an opposing player racially abused him, to which his team-mates reacted by walking off the field, causing the game to be abandoned. The North German Soccer Federation said it had no evidence and questioned “whether such an accusation justifies calling off a game”. Bremer SV, whose player denies these claims, were awarded a 5-0 victory, which infuriated Teutonia Ottensen. "This judgment and the way it was written demonstrate a tolerant attitude towards the problem of racism underlying in this incident," a club statement read. While the alleged incident was not observed by match officials, Teutonia said the federation disregarded testimony from other witnesses. "The questioning of whether an incident of this type is enough for a game to be abandoned not only borders on ignorance, but it also makes all steps taken against racism look like measures that are only welcome if they fit the prevailing circumstances of the club or association," said Teutonia Ottensen. Teutonia’s statement concluded by saying that “the decision is not just an example of what is wrong in sport, but what is wrong in our society.”
