Robert Irwin, son of the beloved zoologist and conservationist Steve Irwin, has celebrated breeding a rare turtle named after his late father. Robert shared a video on Instagram of the newly hatched Elseya Irwini, or Irwin’s turtle, saying it’s “one of the highlights of my entire life.” "One of the most special moments ever for Australia Zoo. This species is a turtle that Dad originally discovered out in the wild and for the first time we have got a little baby", said Robert in the video. He reflected on stories that his father told him “about how beautiful they are” and feels “it's so surreal.” Irwin’s turtle is native to Australia and was first discovered by Steve in 1990 in the Burdekin River during a crocodile-catching trip. When Steve died aged 44 in 2006 after being stung by a stingray in the Great Barrier Reef, fans worldwide expressed their shock and grief. Robert, mother Terri Irwin, and sister Bindi Irwin continue Steve's legacy of wildlife conservation at the Australia Zoo.
