An ice cave collapse in southeastern Iceland claimed the lives of two tourists and injured another during a guided tour. The incident occurred at the Breidamerkurjokull glacier, when a group of 25 tourists from various countries were exploring the cave. Four people were struck by falling ice, with one person dying at the scene and another succumbing to injuries later. A third individual was flown to the hospital by helicopter. Rescue operations, which were suspended overnight due to dangerous conditions, resumed in the early morning with up to 60 researchers on site. The challenging terrain forced rescuers to use chainsaws to cut through the ice to reach the victims. The group was on an organized tour, and most members were outside the cave when the collapse occurred. Breidamerkurjokull is known for its stunning ice formations, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking to explore the insides of glaciers. The glacier is located approximately 300 kilometers from Reykjanes, where a volcanic eruption occurred just days before the collapse.
