UNESCO experts have recommended adding Venice to its list of World Heritage in Danger. The recommendation comes after experts deemed Italy had not done enough to protect the city. The UN’s cultural agency has said the iconic Italian city is at risk of "irreversible" damage. The agency cited overwhelming tourism, overdevelopment and rising sea levels as causes of the damage. UNESCO says the goal of the proposal is to encourage better preservation of the site for the future. Venice averted this designation two years ago owing to emergency measures like banning large ships and a promised conservation plan. Although, the ban on large ships is being enforced. The conservation plan remains unimplemented. A spokesperson for the Venice municipality said they will "carefully read" the proposal before discussing it with the government.
