A recent study examined video game addiction in adolescents over a 6-year period. Researchers found that 90% of gamers don’t play in a harmful way that has negative long-term effects. However, 10% of gamers can become truly addicted to video games and suffer mental, social, and behavioral problems as a result. To see the impact, we examined the trajectories of pathological video gameplay across six years, from early adolescence to emerging adulthood, Sarah Coyne, Lead Author of the study. The characteristics of harmful video gameplay include the following: Excessive time playing video games, difficulty disengaging from them, and disruption to healthy functioning. The video game addicts had higher levels of depression, aggression, shyness, and anxiety than those not addicted. 72% of adolescents had low levels of addiction symptoms for the entire 6-year study. 18% had moderate levels of addiction symptoms that didn’t change over the 6-year period. Addiction symptoms increased over the 6-year period for 10% of adolescents. The study also disproved the stereotype that video game addicts are financially unstable and live with their parents. According to the study video game, addicts are just as financially stable as those not addicted to video games.
